My baby Has The Hiccups. Should I Worry?

Posted by wfleurin at 04:18 PM on November 13, 2007
So, your precious little baby has the hiccups, right? As a new mom, you probably feel uneasy and worry a lot at the very sight of him/her going through this hiccup "phenomenon", and are asking yourself, "What's going on with my baby?" As a new parent myself, I used to worry when my son (he is 4 weeks old as of 10/3/2007) had the hiccups. There is a common remedy to alleviate hiccups, but this procedure, I'm afraid, should not be used on babies for reasons that will become obvious in the following paragraph.

The pressure of carbon dioxide in the lungs (i.e. partial pressure) can be varied greatly and rapidly, depending on the rate and depth of breathing. One can alleviate hiccups by holding one's breath. This can be done by hypoventilation (very slow and shallow breathing), or breathing in and out of a paper bag. Consequently, the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the air spaces of the lungs rises above normal under such conditions. This will then mollify the hiccups! But you cannot ask a baby to hold his/her breath, nor can you place a paper bag on his/her face!! What is the remedy, then?

The best remedy is PATIENCE and TIME! Hiccups are quite normal in babies. Unless you are willing to exert patience, you are going to continue to worry about a fairly normal situation. Just like it take patience with little kids, so does it with baby hiccups! As you may have already noticed, your baby hiccups always go away on its own after some time of patience, do they not?

Hi There, Webmaster:

THis is so true about baby hiccups. Parents need not worry when their baby has hiccups. It will go away with time. You can tell they don't like it, but parents can just wait and expects it to go away on its own.
Your website rocks! Can you put a section there so that we can upload baby or mother pics? Thank you.

--Maryann
